今月の中間選挙で民主党が下院を制し、来年からはねじれ議会となることから、トランプ大統領が掲げるメキシコとの国境に壁を建設する計画が頓挫する可能性が出てきています。

壁建設に50億ドルもの拠出を要求する大統領に対し、民主党は議会での審議拒否による政府機能の停止もちらつかせながら対抗しているというのが現状のようです。

「ステールメイト」はチェスの用語で、いわゆる「詰んだ」状態ではないのですが、有効な駒の動きを取ることが不可能な状態で、それ以上プレーを続行できない状態のことを言い、ルール上は引き分けとされるものだそうです。

従って、”checkmate”とは異なりますが、”stalemate”の-mateは”checkmate”に見られる-mateに同じく、「死」を意味するmatから来ています。
