egghead

英語では、いわゆるインテリを指すのに、"egghead"という表現を使うそうです。

多少の蔑みが含まれる表現です。Merriam-Websterによると、"informal, often disparaging"との注釈があり、


a person with intellectual interests or pretensions : a brainy person


と定義されています。

それにしても、卵（egg）の形をした頭（head）というように読めますが、それがどうして「インテリ」なんでしょうか。

そもそも、"egghead"は禿げ頭を指していたようです。卵の殻がつるつるだからですね。従って、卵の形状からの連想ではありません。

頭の良い人というのは（頭を使い過ぎるせいでしょうか）、禿げていることが多いからかもしれません。
