A deranged panhandler pleaded guilty Wednesday in Manhattan court for hitting a straphanger in the face with a metal pipe when the man refused to give him money.

“Panhandler”というのは、物乞いのことですが、”pan”はフライパン、その”handler”は柄（ハンドル）のことなので、字義通りにはフライパンの柄、という意味です。

物乞いが差し出してくる手（腕）がフライパンの柄のようにも見えるので、”panhandler”というようになったという語源解説があります。

これはメトニミーに分類される表現といっていいでしょう。

ところで、この記事のストーリーを読んでいて、先日スイスに出張した際のことを思い出しました。

仕事を少し早く切り上げて街中に出た時のことですが、やつれた感じの女性が寄ってきて話しかけられました。何を言っているか分からず（多分、ドイツ語だったので）、英語で喋って、とお願いしたところ、トラムの運賃がないから2〜3フランのコインを恵んでくれないか、というものでした。

コインを持っていないと言って切り抜けましたが、いきなり鉄パイプなんかで殴られたりしたらたまったものではありません。
