久しぶりにグーグルニュースのヘッドラインを斜め読みしていたら、"rollick"という見慣れない単語を目にしました。

ランダムハウス英和の解説では、"rollick"は、"romp"と"frolic"の混成によるものだということです。（Merriam-Webster、American Heritage Dictionaryでは、いずれも語源不詳となっていました。）

"romp"は、子供がはしゃぎ回る、というような意味で、"frolic"もはしゃぐ、浮かれて騒ぐ、というような意味です。

従って、"rollick"も同じように浮かれてはしゃぎ回る、というような意味となります。

引用した記事に戻りますと、バーニー・サンダース氏の地方遊説を取り上げた内容です。タイトルの"rollicking weekend rallies"は文字通りにはしゃいだというよりも、次回の大統領選出馬も目論む同氏が地元で気炎を吐いた、というくらいの意味合いでしょうか。

見慣れない単語でしたが、コーパスでは結構多くの用例がヒットしました。
