美味しそうなホットケーキの絵柄と共に描かれた、巻き毛と赤い口紅が特徴的な黒人女性は笑っています。蝶ネクタイを締めた黒人男性は誠実そうに見え、その微かな笑みには親しみも覚えます。

いずれも米国内で販売されている食料品のパッケージです。黒人女性を描いたものは130年の永きに渡って販売されているホットケーキシロップで、黒人男性を描いたパッケージも大手食品メーカーのものです。

日本人の私にはあまり違和感も感じない、これらの商品パッケージですが、アメリカにおいては黒人に対するステレオタイプ的な見方を反映したものとして、見直しがされています。

きっかけは、ミネソタ州での事件に端を発し、全米に拡大する黒人人種差別抗議デモです。


Aunt Jemima will change its name and logo, acknowledging the brand's origins rooted in a racial stereotype, which hearkens back to nostalgia for the South in the times of slavery.

Toward the end of 2020, the 130-year-old pancake and syrup brand will remove the image of "Aunt Jemima" from packaging, parent companies Quaker Foods and PepsiCo said on Wednesday. The name change will follow.

"We recognize Aunt Jemima's origins are based on a racial stereotype," Kristin Kroepfl, chief marketing officer at Quaker Foods North America, said in a statement. "While work has been done over the years to update the brand in a manner intended to be appropriate and respectful, we realize those changes are not enough."

Following the news, food giant Mars also said it's "evaluating all possibilities" for changing its Uncle Ben's brand, which has long been criticized as a stereotype.

黒人のモデルがこうした食料品等のパッケージに使われている事例はこれらに留まらないようです。問題はその描き方であり、黒人を白人よりも一段下に見下しているとみなされる要素があるということのようです。

その背景には、奴隷制の時代に、黒人は白人にサービスを提供する下僕のように扱われてきたという歴史があります。

ところで、これらのパッケージのキャラクターは、"Aunt Jemima"とか、"Uncle Ben"といった名前が付けられているのですが、この"aunt"、"uncle"にも、差別的な響きがあるということについては、これまた意識したことがありませんでした。

記事によりますと、かつて白人の中には黒人を対等に見なすことを拒否するあまり、"Mr."や"Ms."という敬称を使わず、敢えて"Unle"や"Aunt"という呼称を使う傾向があったということです。

"Uncle"はおじ、おじさん、"aunt"はおば、おばさん、で、小生は中学生になって初めて英語を学校で習った時に、最初に教わる単語のうちの1つだったことを思い出します。

勿論ですが、差別的な響きのある単語であると教わった記憶はありません。
