throw up the sponge

ボクシングの試合でリングサイドからタオルを投げ込むのは敗北を認めての行為であることはよく知られています。

映画やドラマのワンシーンの影響でしょうか、圧倒的に攻勢にさらされ、勝つ見込みなく、試合続行には生命の危険すらあるという時、セコンドがタオルを投げ込み、試合終了。そんなイメージです。

以前も取り上げましたが、


throw in the towel


という成句は、タオルを投げ込む行為を文字通りに表現したものであると同時に、敗北を認めるという意味合いで比喩的に用いられる表現です。

ところで、この"throw in the towel"とよく似た表現に、


throw up the sponge


というものが存在するということを最近になって知りました。

ある小説を読んでいたところ使われていた表現です。

調べてみると、"throw up the sponge"（もしくは、"chuck up the sponge"）は、"throw in the towel"よりも昔から使われていたらしいということでした。

In boxing, a fighter’s cornerman throwing a towel into the ring has traditionally been a sign of surrender, quitting or giving up. But in earlier times, it was a sponge that was hurled, and “chuck up the sponge” was the more common phrase.

A 1911 article in The New York Times about a fight in the Bronx used both terms: “His seconds threw a towel in the ring announcing defeat at the beginning of the fifth round” and “Johnson’s seconds threw up the sponge for their man and saved him a further beating.”

タオルとスポンジとの間に厳密な違いや区別があるのか、ボクシング用語としての知識がありませんが、"the sponge"も選手の体から出る汗を吸い取るものであり、タオルと目的は同じようです。

その後、なぜか理由は分かりませんが、"throw in the towel"の方が表現としてはポピュラーなものになったのでしょうか、"throw up the sponge"の実例はあまり多く見られません。
