スプーンの比喩表現、5日目です。

さて、この表現もお手持ちの辞書には載っているのではないかと思います。少し長いのですが、


It takes a long spoon to sup with the devil.


あるいは、


He who sups with the devil should have a long spoon.


というものです。

直訳すると、悪魔と食事をする際には長いスプーンが要る、ということになりますが、何を言わんとしているのでしょうか。

悪魔が出てくるあたり、いかにも西洋的というか、聖書を想起させられる感じがします。日本人にしてみれば鬼とか妖怪、タヌキやキツネの方が馴染があるところかも知れません。

その悪魔とか鬼とかと一緒に食事をするというのはどういうシチュエーションなのか、これも想像しにくいところですが、悪魔や鬼の方が我々よりも一枚も二枚も上手だろうということは何となく分かりますね。

つまり、騙されないように、相手のペースに乗せられないように、慎重になる必要がある、うんと用心する必要がある、というのがこのフレーズの言わんとするところのようです。

一癖も二癖もある相手とのやり取りには十分用心してかかれ、というような意味で使われるようなので、政治のコンテクストなどではぴったり（！？）です。

ところで、なぜ“long spoon”、なのかという疑問が沸くと思います。柄の長いスプーンをイメージするのですが、なぜそれが騙されないために必要なのでしょう？

相手と距離を取るために必要な長さであるとか、悪魔がこっそりクスリなどを混入させないようにするためであるとか、諸説あるようですが、明確な由来は無いようです。
