今週はスプーンの比喩表現を特集していますが、4日目の今日取り上げるのは"wooden spoon"という表現です。

"wooden spoon"とは、負けていることを言います。

それも単に負けているというのではなく、最下位、ビリ、という意味です。

特にスポーツなどの競技のコンテクストで使われることが多いようです。

Collins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsの解説には以下のようにあります。


If someone is last in a race or competition or is the worst at a particular activity, you can say that they get the wooden spoon.


イギリス英語の表現だということです。

文字通りには、木製のスプーン、ということになりますが、これと対をなすのが"silver spoon"です。

先日、"stick one's spoon in the wall"という表現を取り上げた際、生きる（生きている）ことのメタファーとしてのスプーンに触れましたが、そのスプーンが木製か銀製か、という対比では、銀製のスプーンを生まれた子に与えることに込められた希望や願いを見て取ることができるでしょう。

さて、木製のスプーンについては、英国では最下位に対する賞として"wooden spoon"を贈る文化があるそうで、ラグビーなどのスポーツのみならず、例えばケンブリッジ大学では成績最下位の学生にこの"wooden spoon"を授与する習慣があったそうです。
