Democratic nominee Joe Biden said the only way he could lose the 2020 election was through “chicanery,” before later adding he would accept the results of the election. 

“Make sure to vote,” the former vice president told voters at a campaign stop in Pennsylvania, “Because the only way we lose this is by the chicanery going on relative to polling places.” 

Biden said that President Trump was trying to discourage voting by casting doubt on mail-in ballot security and telling supporters to “go to polls and watch very carefully” on Election Day.

10月も半ばとなり、アメリカ大統領選はいよいよ佳境へ入ろうとしているところですが、ペンシルベニア州での遊説でバイデン氏の発言に、

“...the only way we lose this is by the chicanery going on relative to polling places.”

と出てきました。

“chicanery”という単語に見覚えはあったのですが、うろ覚えとあってはピンと来ませんでした。

どこで見たかな、と考えていたら、昔々、頑張って勉強した、“1100 Words You Need To Know”というテキストの中でした。（やはり現実に即して使えていないと身に付かないということですね！？）

“chicanery”は、ごまかしとか詭弁、ずるいやり方、などと訳されます。

今回のアメリカ大統領選では、COVID-19の影響により、投票所に足を運ばずとも投票が可能となる郵便投票（mail-in ballot）が議論になっています。

トランプ氏は郵便投票では不正が発生すると主張し反対していますが、バイデン氏は逆に郵便投票を有権者に呼び掛けており、投票結果の集計で起きるかも知れない“chicanery”こそを警戒しているようです。

バイデン氏は“chicanery”という表現で、集計結果が操作される可能性を言及しているのでしょうか、それともトランプ陣営が集計結果が操作されたとの主張により敗北を受け入れない詭弁を弄する可能性を指摘しているのでしょうか？（あるいはその両方？）

トランプ氏は郵便投票の集計結果は受け入れられないと主張し、バイデン氏は投票結果を受け入れられないと主張し・・・、今年の大統領選はどちらが勝ったとしても、負けた方が潔く敗北宣言することは無さそうです。
