アメリカ大統領選が大詰めを迎えつつありますが、民主党のバイデン氏が優位で、依然リードを保っているという報道を目にします。

しかしながら、油断大敵ということでしょう、バイデン陣営は最後まで気を抜くことはできないと慎重になっているようです。

土壇場で敗北するリスクシナリオも描いていると思われますが、4年前の経験があるからでしょう。

"The very searing truth is that Donald Trump can still win this race, and every indication we have shows that this thing is going to come down to the wire," Biden campaign manager Jen O'Malley Dillon wrote in a memo to supporters on Saturday.
   
"The reality is that this race is far closer than some of the punditry we're seeing on Twitter and on TV would suggest," O'Malley Dillon wrote. "In the key battleground states where this election will be decided, we remain neck and neck with Donald Trump."

searing truth

という表現が目に留まりました。特に"searing"という形容が見慣れないものだったということがあります。

"sear"は動詞で、表面を焼く、焦がすといった意味があります。やけどさせる、という意味もあります。

やけどをさせるような真実、現実（truth）というのはちょっと見ない形容です。

American Heritage Dictionaryを引いてみると、

To cause emotional pain or trauma to

という意味が載っており、これは経験したこと、目にしたり耳にしたことが衝撃的すぎて心に傷を負わせてしまうほどであるということ言っているようです。目に焼き付いて離れない、心に焼き付くような印象を残す、というような表現が日本語にもありますが、それに近いでしょうか。

まさに、2016年の大統領選において、ヒラリー・クリントン候補が相対的に優位とみなされ、一般投票では得票数でトランプ氏を上回っていたものの、最後の最後でどんでん返しのような敗北を喫してしまった、その事実が民主党陣営のトラウマになっていることを、"searing"の形容で表現したものかも知れません。
