ass over teakettle

"ass over teakettle"という俗語表現をご存知でしょうか？

小説を読んでいたら出くわしました。

"You're going down there," she said. "The only question is whether you're going down piggy-back or bum over teakettle. I'll give you five seconds to decide."

(Stephen King, Misery)

上記の引用では、"bum over teakettle"になっていますが、共通する部分の"teakettle"を手元のランダムハウス英和辞書で引いてみると、"ass over teakettle"というフレーズで、

真っ逆さまに

という意味で載っています。

ちょっとピンと来ませんでしたが、小説では引用した箇所の場面、地下室におんぶしてもらっておりるか、それとも（突き落とされて）真っ逆さまに落ちるか、というような話でしたので、何となくそういうことだろうと解釈しました。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryを検索してみますと、

in or as if in a somersault : HEAD OVER HEELS

とあり、頭からつんのめるという意味だと分かります。

この表現は、上述しましたように"ass~"だったり"bum~"だったりと、バリエーションがあるようで、"tail over teakettle"だったりもするようです。

共通する部分としてはやはり"teakettle"なのですが、そもそも何故"teakettle"（やかん）なのでしょうか？

ウェブを検索してみますと、両手にやかんを持って運んでいる人が（多分何かに躓いて）つんのめってしまい、転倒することを表現したもの、というまことしやかな解説がちらほら。

なるほどとも思いましたが、別の説では、"(tea)kettle"とはヘルメットを指しているというものがありました。つまりは頭部のことで、つんのめった際に体の上部（頭）と下部（臀部）が逆さまになる位置関係を言ったもの、ということであろうと得心しました。
