promiseとperil

先日はカマラ・ハリス副大統領の支持率の話題を取り上げましたが、バイデン大統領もこのところ支持率の低下に見舞われています。

就任以降、初めて不支持率が支持率を逆転しました。

新型コロナウィルス感染症の再拡大やアフガン問題が影響しているようです。

Support for President Biden slipped below 50 percent, according to a new poll released Sunday, which found he is underwater with Americans over his chaotic handling of the evacuation of US citizens from Afghanistan and rising COVID cases. 

The 49 percent job-approval rating and 48 percent disapproval rating in the NBC News poll are a drastic drop from the 53 percent approval rating and 39 percent disapproval rating he received in the survey in April. 

“The promise of April has led to the peril of August,” ​said Democratic pollster Jeff ​Horwitt​ of Hart Research Associates, who conducted the poll with Republican pollster Bill ​McInturff of Public Opinion Strategies.

さて、今日着目したいのは記事中引用されている発言の、

“The promise of April has led to the peril of August,”

という部分です。

イタリックにした部分、"promise"と"peril"は何かと対で使われることの多い表現です。

よくあるのが、

promise and peril of xxx

といった表現で、"xxx"の部分には色々な物事が来るのですが、例えばAI（人口知能）だったり、仮想通貨、だったりします。

それぞれ、ある物事が持つポジティヴな側面（期待感）とネガティヴな側面（負の側面、危機感）、といった意味合いがあるように思われます。

さて、“The promise of April has led to the peril of August”については、4月の"promise"が8月の"peril"につながっている、あるいは、4月の"promise"は8月の"peril"へと至ってしまった、とでもなりましょうか。

"promise"は前途有望なこと、"peril"は危機の状態であり、それぞれはバイデン大統領の支持率のことを指していると思われます。

すなわち、4月の"promise"とは、新型コロナ対策が功を奏していた時期で、支持率も69%と高かったことから、大統領への期待、頼もしさがあったということでしょう。

8月の"peril"とは、新型コロナのデルタ株による感染再拡大、アフガン情勢の対応のまずさなどから一気に支持率が急落し、政権運営が危うくなるのでは、という危機感が感じられる状況と言えそうです。
