昨日に同じく、バイデン大統領が副大統領時の機密文書が同氏の個人事務所で見つかった問題についての記事から引用です。

昨日も触れましたが、機密文書の杜撰な管理を巡ってはトランプ氏も同様の問題が取り上げられたこともあって、同じ穴のむじなみたいなことが言われているのですが、この記事のタイトルに出てくる、

Apples and oranges?

という表現に注目しましょう。

この表現を知らなかったのですが、"Apples and oranges"というのは、似て非なるものというような意味合いで使われるようです。

Collins Dictionaryでは以下のように定義されています。

two completely different things that it is useless to compare

リンゴもオレンジもフルーツであることは同じですが、味や食感は全く違う、ということからそういう意味になったのかなと思います。

"compare apples and oranges"というフレーズもあり、こちらは全く異なるものを比較すること、を指すようですが、むしろ比較する意味が無いというような含意があるようです。

しかしながら、どうもすっきりしないのは、対象が多少なりとも異なるからこそ比較する意味がある訳で、逆に同じならば比較する意味は無いのでは、と思うのです。

実のところ、機密文書の不適切な保管問題に関してはトランプ氏のケースとバイデン氏のケースを比較した記事を多く見かけます。

今回の記事によれば、バイデン氏のケースはトランプ氏のそれと比べて重大性という点では低いものらしく、故に"apples and oranges"とは、その悪質さでは比較にならないということが言いたいようです。

From what is known publicly at this time, the Biden papers stand in sharp contrast in scale and importance to the Mar-a-Lago stash of documents. One is potentially criminal (Trump). And one is not criminal (Biden).
