"play second fiddle"という慣用句があります。

"fiddle"というのはバイオリンのことです。"second fiddle"は「第二バイオリン」ということになりますが、オーケストラの花形と言われるバイオリンは基本的に第一バイオリンと第二バイオリンに分けられ、第一が主旋律を奏でる時に、第二は伴奏的な役割になることもあるということで、この慣用句が意味するのは、

to take a subordinate position

ということで、従属的な立ち位置、というような意味合いです。

実際に使われているのを見るのは初めてです。

英国王室のゴシップにあまり興味はありませんが、また内輪からの暴露本の類が出版されるようですね。

個人的には、第二バイオリンが第一バイオリンの従属的立場にあるかは議論のあるところだと思っています。第二バイオリンのほうが主役となることもありますからね。
