機密文書管理の問題を巡っては、トランプ元大統領がマール・ア・ラーゴの別荘に大量の機密文書を不適切に保管していた問題が思い起こされます。

バイデン氏はトランプ氏の杜撰さを厳しく非難しただけに、今回の件はいわゆるブーメランの感を免れません。

当然というか、トランプ氏の矛先はこの件に向けられているようです。

という表現が使われています。卵（egg）にこんな動詞の意味があったのかと辞書を引いたところ、"egg on"は、

扇動する、そそのかす

という意味なのでした。

しかもここでの"egg"は卵の"egg"ではなく、また別の単語なのです。

語源解説を見ますと、ここでの"egg"は、"edge"と同根の単語で、"edge"は古ノルド語でegg、古英語ではecgという綴りであったそうです。
