起床してツイッターのタイムラインを見るとトランプ氏訴追に関するツイートで溢れていました。日本時間の早朝ですので、ニューヨーク（米国東部時間）としては前日火曜日の夕刻です。出頭して罪状認否が行われた直後のタイミングと思われます。

30以上に上ると言われる罪状の詳細は伏せられていましたが、この日公表されたようです。

かねてより報道されていたようにポルノ女優との不倫疑惑揉み消しが主に取り上げられているようですが、メディアの記事では、

catch and kill scheme

という言葉が見えます。何を意味しているのでしょうか。

となっていますが、これはトランプ氏が不倫関係にあったとされるポルノ女優に支払った口止め料に関する疑惑のことを指していると思われます。

実際のところ、"catch and kill"なる表現は辞書に見当たりません。ネットで検索すると、同名のタイトルを冠した書籍があるようで、スキャンダルを揉み消すことと関連するようです。

ニュース記事で検索すると、やはりトランプ氏の不倫疑惑を報じた2018年のFox News記事にこの表現の詳しい説明がありました。

The term “catch and kill” has become increasingly popular in recent weeks as reports surface that the National Enquirer used the practice to keep potentially damaging stories about then-candidate Donald Trump out of the news.

トランプ氏に向けられている疑惑は、大統領選前に不倫疑惑を報じられることを自身に不利になると踏んだ同氏が口止め料を支払うことで揉み消した、というものです。

捕まえて（catch）、殺す（kill）、というおっかない表現ですが、"catch"とはまずスキャンダルを公表する独占的な権利を買い取る、ということです。そして、権利を買取ながらもそれを一切公表することなくお蔵入りにする（kill）、というのがミソです。
