先日も取り上げたデサンティス・フロリダ州知事とディズニーの確執に関連して、新たな展開が報じられています。

同州においてディズニーは特権的な扱いを受けていますが、それを無効にする措置が取られる見込みだということです。

The board appointed by Gov. Ron DeSantis to oversee Walt Disney Co.’s central Florida theme parks on Wednesday moved closer to invalidating an agreement that gave the entertainment giant authority over its Florida properties.

The board on Wednesday asked lawyers to prepare a move that would invalidate the agreement between the Central Florida board that had been controlled by Disney and the company. That agreement, quietly approved in February, gave Disney authority over its theme parks despite a new law that formed a new board controlled by the governor.

The DeSantis administration, however, learned about the agreement in March and then scrambled to respond.

ディズニーに特権的な地位を許すことになった合意は知事のあずかり知らないところで半ば秘密裏に行われたものらしく、違法であり、無効との主張がなされている模様です。

そして、下記のくだりなんですが、

David Thompson, the managing partner from Cooper & Kirk, a Washington, D.C. law firm hired by the newly-installed board, said Disney’s agreements giving it developmental power were not following state law, quoting that they were “illegal, and they will not stand.” Thompson then compared Disney to Scrooge McDuck.

この問題に対処するべく指名されたThompson弁護士がディズニーを批判しているものですが、

Thompson then compared Disney to Scrooge McDuck.

とあります。

ディズニーをScrooge McDuckになぞらえた、と訳せるかと思いますが、Scrooge McDuckというのはディズニーのキャラクターで、スクルージ・マックダック、「スクルージおじさん」と親しまれているキャラクターです。

ディズニーのファンならすぐお分かりなのでしょうが、小生は知りませんでしたので、ディケンズの小説に出てくるScroogeかと勘違いしました（苦笑）

そういう訳で、ディズニーをそのアニメキャラになぞらえるということの意味合いが今ひとつ掴めないでいましたので、別記事を読んでみますと、以下のような部分がありました。

David Thompson, managing partner of the Washington, D.C. law firm Cooper & Kirk, gave a presentation at the meeting on the last-ditch agreement and said that Disney has "engaged in a caper worthy of Scrooge McDuck to try to evade Florida law."

Thompson was referencing an 11th hour development agreement put in place by Disney allies in February, just before DeSantis signed a bill into law that ended Disney’s self-governing power and put the media giant under the control of CFTODB. The old board – the Reedy Creek Improvement District – attempted to transfer its power directory Disney for the next 30 years through the agreements.

ここでは、

(Thompson) said that Disney has "engaged in a caper worthy of Scrooge McDuck to try to evade Florida law.

となっており、ディズニーは「スクルージおじさん」並の"caper"に関わった、というのが文意です。

前置きが随分と長くなってしまいました。

今日の1語は"caper"なんですが、ふざけて跳び回る、という意味の動詞は何だかディズニーキャラクターのイメージに合うような気もします。一方、この単語には俗語で、

犯罪、「大仕事」、「山」

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

という意味があることを知りました。

そうすると引用したくだりは、ディズニーが特権的地位を得るに至ったプロセスを取り上げて、「スクルージばりの違法行為」と表現していることになります。

子供向けディズニーのキャラクターが違法行為とはかなり過激な言い方です。「スクルージおじさん」の役回りは「締り屋」（ランダムハウス英和）、つまりけちん坊らしいですが、ウィキペディアの解説からは実業家でお金にシビアな側面が読み取れます。

"caper"には悪ふざけ、軽率な振る舞い、といった意味もあり、ディズニー批判の意味合いとしてはこちらを意図したものかもしれません。

"caper"という単語自体はヤギを意味するラテン語capraから来ています。
