イギリスでは、この週末はRemembrance Sundayと呼ばれる第一次大戦の戦没将兵追悼の記念日でした。

普段は華やかな英王室も、戦没者の追悼式典とあって、その装いは黒を基調とした喪服です。

記事のタイトルに、

Kate Middleton cuts a solemn figure in an elegant black outfit

とありますが、ここで使われている、"cut a figure"という表現は初めてお目にかかりました。

記事の冒頭にある、

The Princess of Wales looked solemn

と同じ意味合いになるのですが、"cut a figure"という慣用句は、

（人が）・・・の印象を与える、・・・に見える

という意味で用いられます。

「・・・」の部分は名詞figureを修飾する形容詞が担います。例えば、

cut a poor figure（みすぼらしく見える）

cut a ridiculous figure（こっけいに見える）

などです。（用例はいずれも研究社新英和大辞典から）

知ってしまえばそれまでというものですが、この表現の妙は、英文では"cut a figure"と他動詞的であるのに、和訳すると、「〜に見える」といった自動詞的な意味合いとなるところではないかと思います。

この表現の動詞"cut"はどういう意味合いなのだろいかと思います。"figure"とは姿、容姿、風貌といった意味があり、また「ひとかどの人物」という意味もあります。

似た表現に"make a figure"があり、ほぼ同じような用いられ方をしますが、動詞が"make"よりも、"cut"の方が、（相手に与える、残す）印象という点では強い感じがします。
