来年行われる米大統領選において依然有力な候補と目されるトランプ氏について、民主党のゴールドマン議員の発言が取り沙汰されています。

トランプ氏を再び大統領にしてはならない、という趣旨の発言だったようですが、トランプ氏支持者や保守派などからの批判がSNSを中心に炎上し、ゴールドマン議員は謝罪に追い込まれました。発言中、不適切な表現があった、という謝罪なのですが・・・。

A Democrat congressman is walking back a comment he made against former President Trump over the weekend that sparked a social media firestorm.

"Yesterday on TV, I mistakenly used the wrong word to express the importance for America that Donald Trump doesn’t become President again," Rep. Daniel Goldman of New York posted on X on Monday. 

"While he must be defeated, I certainly wish no harm to him and do not condone political violence. I apologize for the poor choice of words."

同議員のコメントの、どういう表現に問題があったのでしょうか？

"His rhetoric is really getting dangerous," Goldman said during an interview with President Biden's former press secretary Jen Psaki on her MSNBC show.

"More and more dangerous. We saw what happened on January 6th, when he used his inflammatory rhetoric now, and his recent truth social post is incredibly, incredibly scary for anyone that might be trying to work in government. And it is just unquestionable at this point that man cannot see public office again. He is not only unfit, he is destructive to our democracy, and he has to be eliminated."

ゴールドマン議員の発言の流れとしては、前回大統領選後に発生した、トランプ氏支持者らによるワシントン議事堂襲撃事件を引き合いに、その後もトランプ氏の言動がさらに危険なものになっているとして、大統領候補に相応しくないと断じるものだったようです。

問題になったのは（記事のタイトルに書かれていますが）、

he has to be eliminated.

の"eliminate"という動詞です。

"eliminate"という動詞は、排除する、除去する、という和訳がまず思い浮かびますが、確かに強い表現ではありますが、さほど不適切な表現とも思えないというのが正直な感想でした。特に、トランプ氏がこれまで政敵やメディアに対して行ってきた数々の過激な言動を思い起こすならば、そのトランプ氏に対して、「排除されるべき」と言ったところで、当のトランプ氏は意にも介さないのではないかと思われたのです。

ところが、"eliminate"という動詞は「殺す」という意味でも用いられ、ここで問題になっているのはまさしくその意味合いであるらしいことが見えてきました。

改めて辞書を引いてみますと、"eliminate"の意味に「殺す」という意味合いを載せているものと、そうでないものがあるようです。

手元にある英和辞書では、研究社新英和大辞典には載っておらず、ランダムハウス英和では俗語表現として載せていました。

American Heritage Dictionary、Merriam-Webster（オンライン）には見当たりませんでした。Oxford Dictionaryのサイトでは、"eliminate"のこうした意味合いを婉曲表現（euphemism）としています。

それで、手元にあるOxford Dictionary of Euphemismsを見てみますと、以下の解説です。

eliminate  to kill.

A variant of LIQUIDATE with the same origin and the same connotations, usually of political or espionage killings.

"eliminate"の排除するという意味も強い表現ではありますが、政治のコンテクストでは政敵の暗殺をほのめかす表現だというのは知りませんでした。
