少し引用が長くなってしまいましたが、夫人の問題提起を受けたバイデン大統領のコメントが引用されています。その中に、

God willing

という表現が出てきます。

正直なところ、この表現を知りませんでした。

この言い回しは、"God be willing"とも言うそうですが、つまりは仮定法なのであって、逐語訳としては、もし神が望むならば、ということになります。

そういう訳で、

運が良ければ、ひょっとしたら、もしうまくいったら

という甚だ不確実性を含む事について言及する際に用いる慣用句なのだそうです。
