停戦合意も無し崩しに再び攻撃の応酬となっているアメリカとイランです。トランプ大統領は大規模軍事攻撃も示唆していましたが、直前になって命令を取り下げたと報じられました。理由はミサイルが枯渇する恐れがあるためだと邦紙朝刊で読んだところです。

ミサイルは実際に枯渇しつつあるのか、そうでないのか？

政権幹部の説明はやや混乱しているようです。表向きには十分な蓄えがあるというのは軍事力の誇示でしょうか。現実にはミサイルの数はこのペースで使い続けると確実に減ってくるとされ、対イラン戦争はともかく、将来的に発生するかもしれない紛争に対応できなくなる恐れが指摘されているといいます。

さて、今日の1語、"deplete"は、蓄えが少しずつ減ってしまうことを指す動詞です。

満たすという意味のラテン語plereに、欠如を意味する接頭辞de-が付いたもので、満たす（こと）の逆となり、枯渇を意味します。

同じくラテン語plereを語源とする"complete"については説明は不要ですね。
