人工知能（AI）のコンテクストで使われる言葉に、

singularity 

というものがあります。技術的特異点などと訳され、AIが人間の知能を超えて自律的に機能し始め、もはや人間がコントロール出来なくなる状況に至るというような意味合いで使われます。

人工知能分野の草分け的スタートアップ企業であるOpenAI社のアルトマンCEOが、現代の AIが既に"singularity"に達したとの発言をしたと報じられています。

OpenAI's CEO says we've reached a point in the AI race that is the stuff of science fiction novels.

"We are now, like, in the singularity," Sam Altman said on Saturday's episode of the "Relentless" podcast.

The singularity is often regarded as the point at which artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence and begins advancing at a pace that's difficult for people to predict or control.

"singularity"という概念はこれまでサイエンスフィクションや映画の世界のはなし、つまり非現実でしかなかった訳ですが、つい先日、Open AI社が開発中の AIモデルがテスト環境を逸脱して他社の情報システムを攻撃するという「事件」が発生しました。開発中の AIが自律的に制限を乗り越えたと見られており、"singularity"を超える事象として見られているようです。

"singularity"という用語自体は数学や物理学の概念を表す用語として使われてきたのですが、 AIにおける定義はさすがに古くからある紙の辞書には見あたりません。American Heritage Dictionary（ネット版）では時代を反映してこれを載せています。
