逮捕されたのは有名な元フットボール選手だということですが、車内には飲みかけのアルコール飲料のボトルがあったと報じられています。被疑者はアルコール検知テストを拒否したとかで、素直に応じればよかったものを問題をこじらせているようです。

More details about ex-Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo’s OWI arrest are coming to light, including a new allegation that an open container of booze was found in his car after he was stopped by cops.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office released to the California Post copies of three citations its officers hit Romo with in the immediate aftermath of his July 23 arrest in Wisconsin, and one of them claimed the CBS NFL analyst had an “open bottle of an alcoholic beverage” located on the passenger side of his black Jeep.

The second citation Romo was tagged with was for “unsafe passing on right.” Police wrote in the document that he drove “in the marked right distress lane to pass vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 during rush hour traffic” before he “cut across the marked gore” to get to where he wanted to go.

ところで記事中では、摘発された違反は他にもあって、2つ目の違反として危険な右側通行が挙げられています。その記述の中で、

he drove “in the marked right distress lane to pass vehicles in lanes 1 and 2 during rush hour traffic”

というくだりがあるのですが、具体的にどういうことなのかよく分からず、しばし考えることになりました。"distress lane"というのが何を指しているのかが分からなかったのです。辞書を引いてみましたが載っていません。

色々調べていますと、以下のような記事に出会しました。

MILWAUKEE -- An SUV crashed into a tree off southbound I-43 near Hampton Avenue in Milwaukee Monday afternoon, Oct. 22. Two people needed to be extricated from the car.

According to the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, the vehicle struck a tree, which was broken and fell into traffic, blocking one lane.

Deputies investigating the incident located a second vehicle whose driver indicated the SUV had passed him in the right distress lane at the top of the Silver Spring on-ramp. Neither driver was suspected of being impaired.

この記事でも"distress lane"が出てくるのですが、コンテクストとしてはハイウェイでSUVが"right distress lane"で追い越しをかけ、道路脇の木に衝突、その衝撃により走行車線上に転倒して走行不能になった模様です。

いずれの記事も（偶然に）ミルウォーキーでの事故ですが、アメリカの道路は右側通行であることを思い出す必要があります。よって、"right distress lane"というのは道路で言うと右端、つまり追越し車線ではない方の端っこということになります。つまり、"distress lane"は道路の路肩部分を指すのであろうと思われました。

自動車学校のような話になりますが、日本の道路交通法において高速道路上の路肩は走行が禁じられています。たまに高速道路で渋滞が発生した時など、この路肩を走って追い越していく不届き者のドライバーがいますが大抵の場合先の方で警察の御用になっているのを見かけます。

"distress"には遭難、危険の意味がありますが、"distress lane"とは緊急的に避難が必要な場合、例えば車両故障時などに限って危険回避のためにクルマを停めるために設けられたスペースを指すものであろうというのが結論です。
