own up

The mother of Olivia Pratt-Korbel paid tribute to her little shadow' in an emotional video where she pleads with those responsible for her daughter's death to 'own up'.

Cheryl Korbel, whose nine-year-old daughter was shot in their home in Dovecot, Liverpool, broke down as she recalled how much she loved hearing little Olivia talk.
(Matt Powell. Olivia Pratt-Korbel's mother breaks down in emotional plea for her daughter's killer to come forward and 'own up'. Daily Mail. September 6, 2022.)

own up
own to

We will deliver.

Double-digit inflation, a looming recession, labor unrest, soaring household energy bills and possible fuel shortages this winter — all will confront Ms. Truss as she moves into 10 Downing Street. She also must repair a party deeply divided after Mr. Johnson’s turbulent three-year tenure, which peaked in 2019 with a landslide general election victory but descended into unrelenting scandals after that.

In a businesslike speech to a party gathering after her victory was announced, Ms. Truss promised a “bold plan” to lower taxes and bolster the economy, adding: “We will deliver, we will deliver and we will deliver.”
(Liz Truss to Replace Boris Johnson as Prime Minister. New York Times. September 5, 2022.)

We will deliver.

"We will deliver, …"

put hay in the loft

After three years of turbulence, scandal and an extended period of purgatory, prime minister Boris Johnson will finally quit Downing Street on Tuesday, leaving behind a job he had coveted since childhood — but few believe he will fade quietly into political obscurity.

Johnson has told friends he could earn millions in his first year out of office, and his allies believe he could make a comeback once he has, in the words of his ally Lord Jonathan Marland, “put hay in the loft”.

Despite being out of power, Johnson’s allies think that as a backbench Tory MP, with a host of media platforms and a strong and strident base among party activists, he will continue to wield vast influence on British politics.
(What next for Boris Johnson? Financial Times. September 4, 2022.)

put hay in the loft

Lord Marland, a former trade envoy, told the BBC last week that Mr Johnson wants to “go and put hay in the loft” after he leaves office.

“As he said to me the other day, he wants to go and put hay in the loft, in other words to build up his bank balance so that he can afford to pay for the lifestyle that he has created,” he said.
(Dominic McGrath. Boris Johnson expected to skip Conservative Party conference. Yahoo! News. September 5, 2022.)

干し草(hay)に関しては、この他にも、寝床("hit the hay")や好機("make hay of〜")などの意味もあります。

defenestration

The chairman of Russian oil giant Lukoil, who along with his company had criticized the Ukraine invasion, reportedly died Thursday after falling from the sixth-floor window of a hospital in Moscow.

Ravil Maganov died in what sources are calling a possible suicide after his body was found on the ground of Moscow's elite Central Clinical Hospital, according to Russian news reports.
(Jon Brown. Russian oil executive who criticized Ukraine invasion dead after reportedly falling out of hospital window. Fox News. September 1, 2022.)

Former Defense Intelligence Agency officer Rebekah Koffler, author of the book "Putin's Playbook," told Fox News Digital that "we will never know exactly what happened to Maganov," but noted that death by defenestration is "standard Russian intelligence playbook" regarding the doctrine of "wet affairs," the translation of a Russian term referring to operations that spill blood.
(ibid.)

last-ditch

Bed Bath & Beyond is in deep turmoil. The company is trying to rescue itself and stay out of bankruptcy by shrinking.

The chain said Wednesday that it will lay off approximately 20% of corporate employees, close around 150 stores and slash several of its in-house home goods' brands.

Crucially, the company also said it secured more than $500 million in financing to shore up its ailing financial straits.
(Bed Bath & Beyond is making a last-ditch effort to save itself. CNN. August 31, 2022.)

making a last-ditch effort
