こんな意味もあったの？ ― collapse

"collapse"という単語からまず思いつく日本語は、


崩壊、崩落
陥没
総崩れ
虚脱


などの表現ではないでしょうか？単語としてはいわゆるキホンｘｘｘｘ語のリストに入るレベルの単語ではないかと思います。

ところが、下記のタイトルと記事を読んで、私はおや？と思わずにいられませんでした。

TOKYO (AP) — It is the king of sushi, one of the most expensive fish in the world — and dwindling so rapidly that some fear it could vanish from restaurant menus within a generation.

"Tune collapse"という表現に注目です。“マグロの崩壊”？機械翻訳ならそのような訳文を出力しても驚きませんが。

マグロの乱獲問題は以前から国内外で報道されてきましたので、"collapse"とはそのこと、つまり乱獲による“資源減少”のことを指していると考えられます。

ところが、手元の英和辞書などを確認してみても、そのような意味を載せているものは見当たりません。

辞書で確認する限り、"collapse"するのは、建物などの物理的な構造物（最近では笹子トンネル天井の崩落）や、人（失神したりや虚脱症状になるという意味で）、計画や事業、そして市場や価格、などであり、資源の減少や枯渇について、"collapse"で表現するという説明は見当たりません。

ここでコーパスの出番です。名詞"collapse"と共起する表現（つまり、"xxx collapse"というコロケーション）を検索してみると、多くは上述したコンテクストでの用例がほとんどなのですが、資源、特に漁業資源について、"collapse"を用いている例がいくつか確認できたのです。以下、いくつか引用します。

これらの用法を見ると、"collapse"には特に魚などの乱獲による資源減少を意味する用法があると考えることができます。

英和辞書に載っていてもよさそうなものだと思いますが、如何！？
