スマホユーザーはご注意を！ ― unbeknownst

スマホを使っている人は経験があるかも知れません。まだ経験したことのない人は注意した方がよさそうです。

そう言えばスマホが全盛になる以前もこのようなことを聞いたことがあるように思います。携帯端末の中でも、折りたたんだり開いたりするタイプの端末ではなく、操作ボタンがむき出しになったタイプの端末でよく起きていた話だったと思います。

Former Massachusetts senator Scott Brown learned this the hard way the other day when what appeared to be a drunken tweet ("Bqhatevwr") sent from his phone was trending worldwide. Brown claims what happened was nothing more than an extreme case of "pocket dialing." Or, as it's less delicately called, "butt dialing."

You've talked on your phone, put it back in your pocket, then one of the phone's buttons is accidentally hit, and before you know it, you're tweeting or dialing out, unbeknownst to you.

iPhoneなどのスマホで、所有者本人が全く気付かないうちに発信していた、あるいはツイッターなどのSNSに意味不明の投稿をしていた、というインシデントが増加しているそうです。これを、"pocket dialing"、あるいは"butt dialing"などと呼んでいるそうですが、要はズボンのポケット（もしくはお尻のポケット、ということで"butt"）に入れておいたスマホが、体の動きによって、そうと気づかないうちに操作されたようになり、アドレス帳に登録した相手に発信されたり、ランダムな番号にダイヤルされたりということが起きるそうです。

電話を受けた相手は発信者からの声の代わりに、雑踏のざわめきや電車のガタゴトいう音、端末が拾う意味不明の会話を聞くだけです。

さて、今日の単語、"unbeknownst"は、知られない、気づかれない、という意味の形容詞、あるいは副詞です。実は、"unbeknown"という形容詞の単語も存在します。"know"というスペルが見えますから意味は分かるというものですが、この単語の構造は面白いと思いませんか。

接頭辞のun-は否定の意味だろうと分かります。be-は？"known"は動詞"know"の過去分詞形でしょうか。接尾辞の-stは、一体何でしょう？

色々な構成要素が結合している訳ですが、un-は否定の接頭辞、続くのはbeknownという、今は存在しませんが中期英語の動詞beknowenの過去分詞形だということです。そして、末尾の-stは、中期英語における副詞的属格接尾辞と呼ばれる-esに由来するそうなのですが、"amongst"や"against"などの単語に見られるように、現代英語ではtが付加されているものです。

蛇足ですが、記事によりますと、この"pocket dialing"のために、違法薬物の取り引き現場を押さえられ、敢え無く御用となったケースもあるそうです。

Brown is not alone in his woes. A tow-truck driver in Florida was arrested after pocket-dialing 911.

What the dispatchers listened in on was a conversation about a drug sale. The cellphone's location was pinpointed, the police called, and an arrest made after they found a crack pipe in the man's truck. Justice, 21st-century style.

If there was ever a lesson to be learned here, it's that your iPhone, while hip and happening, is not necessarily always your best friend.
