今を楽しむ ― carpe diem

グーグルのCFO（最高財務責任者）が退任したというニュースが目に留まりました。

グーグルの業績は低迷していたっけ？と思いました。何か他の不祥事でクビになったのか？そう思った人も多いかも知れません。

いえいえ、いずれでもありません。退任の理由は、家族と過ごす時間を持つため、ということだそうです。ちなみに、CFOはまだ52歳です。


His goodbye post started off like so many other trite corporate farewells. Google Chief Financial Officer Patrick Pichette, after seven years spent deep in the Internet giant's financial books, announced on Tuesday he’ll be retiring from the job "to spend more time with my family."

But then it took a sincere turn seldom seen in the world of executive-departure spin. It appears he really is retiring to spend more time with his family.

さて、この記事のタイトルに注目します。

"Carpe diem"というのはラテン語です。英訳すると、


Catch the day.（あるいは、Seize the day.）


となりますが、 「この日をとらえよ」とは、未来の繁栄を求めるのではなく、今現在を楽しもう、というような意味で使われるフレーズです。

なるほど、その意味するところは分かりますが、サラリーマンたるもの、このCFOのように家族と過ごす時間を求めて仕事を辞めたら食い扶持がなくなってしまいます・・・。
