あまり見かけない単語だと思いますがいかがでしょうか？


A group of runners in Chicago saved a man from drowning in Lake Michigan on Tuesday morning, according to a report from the Chicago Tribune.

John Corba, 43, was running on the Chicago Lakefront Trail, a popular training route, when he eyed the man flailing in the water.

Corba noticed a paddleboard rental shop near the beach, so he ran in and asked an attendant to borrow a board.

Two other runners jumped into the lake to help, according to the Tribune. “Corba quickly began paddling out to the struggling man, and all three propped the man on the board and brought him to safety,” the article said.

ということですが、"flail(ing)"という単語になじみがありません。辞書を引くと、


（穀物を打つ）殻ざお


という名詞の意味がまずあり、動詞としては、


殻ざおで打つ；（殻ざおで打つように）連打する

これでは意味がうまく通りません。Merriam Webster Dictionaryを検索してみると、


to wave the arms or legs wildly


という定義が確認できます。これは手足をばたばたとするという意味だと解釈できますが、そうすると溺れかけている人のイメージと重なります。

"flail"の語源は、ラテン語で鞭を意味するflagrumなのだそうです。手足をばたばたする様子が、鞭がしなるのに喩えられたものでしょうか。

手足をじたばたするのはもはや物事をうまくコントロールできていない、ということでもあります。このことからさらに意味が発展して、失敗、失墜、といったようなネガティヴな形容として使われるようにもなったようです。
