アメリカ大統領選の話題ばかりですが、クリントン氏、トランプ氏、両候補の争いが今後焦点になってくるなかで、トランプ氏の失態が目立ち始め、支持率ではクリントン氏が一転優勢となった模様です。

具体的には、殉職したイスラム系のアメリカ軍人の両親に対する暴言や、「仕組まれた大統領選」といった根も葉もない決め付けの発言などで批判を浴びています。

過激な発言は同氏のトレードマークみたいなものですが、ここにきて支持率に影響するような失態は最終的に大統領選で同氏が敗北するきっかけとなるのではないかという見方（期待！？）も出てきています。

Those comments set the stage for an explosive outcome the likes of which this country has never seen. It is not far-fetched to imagine Trump inciting his partisans against accepting the verdict of voters, further inflaming an already toxic political climate in Washington.

さて、一段落目で使われている、


augur


という表現に着目したいと思います。

augurというのは名詞では古代ローマの卜占官、つまり未来を占う役人のこととなっていますが、動詞では「予言する」という意味です。

昔の人々は鳥の飛び方を見て吉兆を占ったそうですが、"augur"の"au-"という語幹は鳥を意味するものです。また、"augment"といった単語に見られるように増加するといった意味とも関連するのですが、「増加する」というのは別の意味では「栄える」ということで、これも占いと無関係ではないようです。

ところで記事では、

となっているところに注目しましょう。占いというものは吉兆を予言するものであり、良いこともあれば悪いこともある、というのは当たり前ですが、"augur"という動詞に続くのは、poorlyであったり、ill、against、well、など様々であることがコーパスの検索で分かります。

"poorly"となっているのは当然トランプ氏自身にとっては「凶」な訳です。用例を見てみましょう。
