“Head will roll”という表現をご存知でしょうか？

NYCHA（New York City Housing Agency; ニューヨークの住宅供給公社みたいなものでしょうか）で人事刷新（shake-upが行われたようです。

人事刷新というのは大抵の場合不祥事を契機に行われるもので、記事のケースも例に漏れずといったところです。

という訳で、”head will roll”の意味するところは、つまり「クビ」ということです。

ここで、頭を意味する”head”は組織を構成する人員のことです。ヘッドカウントで組織構成員の数を指すのと同じです。

もう一つ、”head”には組織の長という意味で用いられることもありますが、記事ではトップの首がすげ替えられたのではなく、ナンバー2が辞職ということになったようで、皮肉をもって報じられているようです。

“Head will roll”というフレーズについては、ランダムハウス英和では、「ただでは済まない」と載っていました。

そんなことしたら職を失うよ、という脅し文句でしょうか。
