今日のトップニュースは、米連邦議会議事堂がトランプ支持者に占拠される異常事態になったと報じています。

大統領選の結果に不満を持つトランプ氏支持者らが大挙してワシントンの議事堂に押し寄せ、警備を突破し、警官らともみ合いになりながらも、議場などになだれ込みました。。

議事堂ではバイデン次期大統領就任に向けて、選挙人団投票の結果集計に関する審議が進んでいたところだったようです。

The head of the National Association of Manufacturers, a group representing 14,000 companies in the U.S., on Wednesday called on Vice President Mike Pence to “seriously consider” invoking the 25th Amendment of the Constitution to remove President Donald Trump from office.

National Association of Manufacturers（全米製造業者協会）はトランプ氏とトランプ氏支持者に対する非難の声明を出し、"25th Amendment"に従って、副大統領のペンス氏はトランプ氏を排除すべきであると主張したとあります。

"25th Amendment"（合衆国憲法修正第25条）は非常時等において大統領が執務できない場合に副大統領がその職務を遂行することができると規定しているものです。

さて、全米製造業者協会の声明については記事中にその全文が引用されていました。

The statement came as the Business Roundtable and leaders such as Citi CEO Michael Corbat and Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff condemned the acts.

“Armed violent protestors who support the baseless claim by outgoing President Trump that he somehow won an election that he overwhelmingly lost have stormed the U.S. Capitol today, attacking police officers and first responders, because Trump refused to accept defeat in a free and fair election. Throughout this whole disgusting episode, Trump has been cheered on by members of his own party, adding fuel to the distrust that has enflamed violent anger. This is not law and order. This is chaos. It is mob rule. It is dangerous. This is sedition and should be treated as such. The outgoing president incited violence in an attempt to retain power, and any elected leader defending him is violating their oath to the Constitution and rejecting democracy in favor of anarchy.

声明の文中で、

と、今回の暴動について、畳みかけるように断罪しているのですが、最後の"sedition"という単語を知らなかったので、辞書を引くことに。

英和辞書では、

扇動、そそのかし；反政府的扇動行為

などと載っています。

つまり、トランプ氏は大統領職にありながら、大統領選の結果を受け入れず、支持者を煽ることによって反政府的な言動を行っていると強く批判しているものです。

ランダムハウス英和辞書では、類語として"treason"（反逆罪）を挙げていますが、"sedition"と"treason"の違いは、後者が直接的な反政府的行為を指すのに対して、前者は間接的（文筆活動や演説などによる）であるということです。

ところで、Merriam-Webster Onlineでも"sedition"のエントリをチェックしてみたところ、本日1月6日、この単語の検索が急上昇しており、1,500%も増加したそうです。

あまり使われることのない単語なのかも知れません。

スペルが"sedation"（鎮静）とよく似ていますが（1字違い！）、意味は全くの逆。

語源欄を見てみると、"sedition"のse-は分離（separation, apart）を意味し（"secret"に同じ）、-itio-とは行くこと（going）、とありました。即ち、分離、分断するように行動すること、ということです。
