新年おめでとうございます。本年も「えいご1日1語」を何卒よろしくお願い申し上げます。

さて、新年早々またこの話題かと思われるかもしれませんが、ウィルスに年末年始はありませんとはよく言ったもので、年が変わったからといってパンデミックが収束するというものでもありません。

現に国内における新規陽性者数は大晦日に過去最高を記録し、危機感が高まっています。

アメリカでは、カリフォルニア州で医療崩壊の瀬戸際にあるというCNNの記事から引用です。

Overflowing hospital morgues, increased 911 wait times, beds only opening when patients die. Hospitals in California, where almost all of the state's 40 million residents are living under stay-at-home orders, are seeing historic stress points.

The surge of new coronavirus cases and hospitalizations is pushing hospitals in Los Angeles County to the "brink of catastrophe," a top health official there said.

“the woods”とはパンデミックによる危機的状況のことを指しています。「森」には、森林浴のようなクリーンなイメージがありますが、森の中にいると光を遮られて暗いため、欧米人にとっては危機や災難を示唆するメタファーであると聞いたことがあります。

人類はまだパンデミックの危機的状況から脱したのではなく、その真っ只中にある（in the thick of the woods）というのが正しい現状把握でしょう。

“thick”とは太い（部分）ということですが、その他の意味としては、森の中の茂み、また（危機の）真っ最中である、という意味で用いられます。

2021年は何とか早くにこの状況から脱したいものですが、暗くて先行きが見えにくいというのが誰もが抱いている気分ではないでしょうか。
