ストライクはなぜ"strike"か？ ― strike

トランプ大統領支持者による連邦議事堂の襲撃事件は世界に衝撃を与えました。

事態を重くみた大手SNSが、トランプ氏のアカウントを停止するなどの措置を取り、その賛否が議論となっています。

ツイッターがアカウントの無期限停止を決めたのに続き、フェースブックもアカウント停止を決めました。

さらに今日、YouTubeがトランプ氏の公式チャンネルを一時停止（suspension）する措置を取ったと報じられています。

その内容としては、アカウントの完全停止までは行かず、暴動を煽るような一部コンテンツの削除と新たな動画アップロードの停止というもののようです。

YouTube is suspending President Donald Trump's channel for at least one week, and potentially longer, after his channel earned a strike under the platform's policies, the company said Tuesday evening.

A recent video on Trump's channel had incited violence, YouTube told CNN Business. That video has now been removed.

YouTube declined to share details of the video that earned Trump the strike, but said that after the one-week timeout, it will revisit the decision. YouTube also removed content from the White House's channel for violating policy, the company told CNN Business.

"After careful review, and in light of concerns about the ongoing potential for violence, we removed new content uploaded to the Donald J. Trump channel and issued a strike for violating our policies for inciting violence," a YouTube spokesperson said in a statement.

"As a result, in accordance with our long-standing strikes system, the channel is now prevented from uploading new videos or livestreams for a minimum of seven days—which may be extended."

さて、引用した記事の中で、"strike"という単語が何度か出てきます。

his channel earned a strike...

the video that earned Trump the strike...

issued a strike for violating our policies...

in accordance with our long-standing strikes system...

などです。

どういう意味でこの"strike"を用いているのだろうと思って調べてみると、どうやらYouTubeはアカウント停止処分を下す場合の判断基準を、野球の三振ルールになぞらえて、Community Guideline strike basicsと呼ばれる独自規定にしているということが分かったのでした。

つまり、同サイトの利用規約に違反する場合、1回の違反は１ストライク、2回目がツーストライク、3回目はスリーストライクでアウト（アカウントの永久停止）、ということのようです。（実際には、最初のストライクがカウントされる前にWarningという段階があるということです。）

「ストライク」の概念は当事者に対する不利益、マイナスポイントということは理解できますね。

さて、本題です。

野球のストライクはなぜ"strike"（叩く、殴る、打つ）なのか？

打者が空振りしたり、ストライクゾーンの球を打てなかったりした場合にカウントされる「ストライク」を“strike”（打つ）というのは、なるほど、言われてみれば不思議です。（"hit"と"strike"が英単語として同義語であることからしても不思議です。）

野球の「ストライク」に相当する辞書の定義も一応チェックしました。

a pitched ball that is in the strike zone or is swung at and is not hit fair

A pitched ball that is counted against the batter, typically one that is swung at and missed, fouled off, or judged to have passed through the strike zone.

ここでのポイントは、空振りはストライクの一種ではあるけれども、その他にファウルを打ってしまった場合もストライクにカウントされる、ということです。

小生がよく参照するサイトにOnline Etymology Dictionaryがありますが、下記の説明がありました。

modern sense developed by 1890s, apparently from foul strike, which counted against the batter, and as hit came to be used for "contact with the ball" this word was left for "a swing and a miss" that counts against the batter

この説明だけではよく分からないというのが正直なところですが、要は、"strike"というのは"foul strike"という表現から来ているという説明です。

興味深いことに、野球のルールというのは時代と共に変遷してきており、かつてはファウルボールはストライクにカウントされないルールだったそうです。しかし、打者のファウルでも進塁が認められるのでは守備側が著しく不利になるため、"foul strike"のルールが採用されたそうです。（Baseball Referenceのサイトの解説による。）

また、かつてはストライクゾーンの球を振らなくともストライクにカウントされることはなく、打者はいい投球が来るまでバットを振らずにいることもできたそうです。

1858年のルール改正でストライクゾーンの球を振らない場合にもストライクとしてカウントされるというルールが追加されたとあります。

Should a striker stand at the bat without striking at good balls repeatedly pitched to him, for the purpose of delaying the game or of giving advantage to a player, the umpire, after warning him, shall call one strike, and if he persists in such action, two and three strikes. When three strikes are called, he shall be subject to the same rules as if he had struck at three balls.

ここからは小生の想像ですが、古い時代のルールにおいては「ストライク」とは、かつては空振りとファウルボールに限定される概念であり、それらは"a swing and a miss"ということで“foul strike”と表現されてきたものの、ルール改正により見逃し（つまりストライクゾーンの球を振らない場合）にもストライクとしてカウントされるようになったことから、その意味を拡大したということではないかと思います。

ちなみにですが、三振によるアウトをアルファベットのKで表現することはよく知られているところですがあ、これは“struck(out)”の“k”から来ているそうです。
