antipodean

オーストラリアはご存知の通り南半球にある国ですが、同国を指すのに、

antipodean

という表現が用いられることがあります。

これは、"antipodes"という単語から来ているのですが、日本語にすると、

対蹠地、対蹠点

という、これまた聞きなれない表現の単語になります。

「たいせき」、もしくは「たいしょ」と読むのですが、正反対、というのがその意味合いで、つまりは地球上で北半球側に位置する立場から見たら、中心を通る赤道に対して正反対の場所にある、ということを言っている訳です。

従って、"antipodean"は特にオーストラリアに限らず、ニュージーランドもそのように呼ぶことがあります。

語源的には、接頭辞のanti-はみなさんも良くご存知の「アンチ」の意味であり、pod-は足を意味するギリシャ語です。

北半球側と南半球側とで、足裏がちょうど真反対、という発想が面白いですが、真面目な話、イギリス人の概念であり、見方を反映した単語ということになります。
