abysmal

Princeton University Professor Cornell West said, "the Christian Church has been an abysmal failure" when it comes to helping poor, black and working people. He criticized multiple institutions, including police, public schools and financial institutions.
(St Louis Post, 2015)

She was elected president of the company, but she felt "abysmally ignorant" about how to proceed.
(New York Times, 2001)

Considering the abysmal condition of our military and a decline in readiness, why is this a top priority for the Obama administration? " retired Lt. Gen. Jerry Boykin, executive vice president of the Family Research Council --- a Washington-based Christian lobbying group --- said in a statement.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution, 2015)

When you look into the abyss, the abyss also looks into you.
(Friedrich Nietzsche)
