先月25日、突然建物の一部が崩落し、多数が行方不明となっているフロリダ州のコンドミニアムですが、残っている建物が解体されることになったと今朝の記事で読みました。

これを書いている今は既に爆破による解体が完了しているのですが、部分的に残る建物はいつまた崩落するかも分からず、確認できた死者を圧倒的に上回る行方不明者の捜索の障害になっていたことから、爆破による解体が決定されたという経緯があったようです。

The rest of the partially collapsed condominium tower in Surfside, Florida was demolished around 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Earlier, local authorities told residents in the surrounding area to shelter in place as well as close all windows, doors and air intakes. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said the shelter-in-place order lifts two hours after the demolition is complete.

といった表現の、"shelter-in-place"です。

"shelter"というのは避難するという意味ですが、"in place"とは「その場に（留まる）」ちということで、これはみだりに外出せず今いる場所に留まることで被害に遭わないようにする、ということを指しており、いわゆる「自宅待機」、「ステイホーム」と同じ意味合いだそうです。

パンデミック下、「ステイホーム」の掛け声は聞き飽きたというのが正直なところですが、英語では"shelter-in-place"という表現があるとは知りませんでした。

SIPと略すこともあるようです。
