pingdemic

新型コロナウィルスによるパンデミック以降、～demic、という造語（かばん語）がいくつか生まれました。

当ブログでも、infodemic、twindemic、などを取り上げましたが、先日見かけた、

pingdemic

については、その字面からは何のことか直ぐには分からなかったというのが正直なところです。

果たして、イギリス国内で起きている"pingdemic"とは？

July 19 was meant to mark the end of pandemic lockdown restrictions in England, as progress continued in vaccinating people against Covid-19. But just as the country relaxes most restrictions, it’s facing a third wave of coronavirus infections as the highly contagious delta variant spreads across the U.K. A record number of people who’ve come into contact with an infected person are self-isolating, most of them having been “pinged” by the National Health Service’s contact-tracing app. The “pingdemic,” as it’s been dubbed, has produced huge disruptions for businesses and critical services that threaten to undermine efforts to revive an economy still recovering from its deepest recession in 300 years.

"pingdemic"の"ping"という単語の解釈がポイントとなる訳ですが、"ping"とは、

to send a usually brief message (such as a text message) or notification to (a person, a person's phone, etc.)

(Merriam-Webster Dictionary)

の意味が相当し、これは古い辞書には載っていないと思われます。いわゆる、インターネット時代の単語ということになります。（"ping"の動詞の意味合いについては以前も取り上げたことがあります。）

さて、"pingdemic"とは、新型コロナ陽性と診断された人と接触した可能性のある人に対して通知する、いわゆる「接触アプリ」の通知を受けた人が自主隔離の措置を取らなければならないことで、就業に影響し、ために医療や物流、サービス業などでサービス提供が困難な事態が発生するなど、障害を引き起こしている状況を指しています。

「接触アプリ」についてはイギリスのみならず、各国で運用されていますが、アプリの動作原理や運用方法の違いが"pingdemic"発生に影響している側面があるようです。
