staunchとstanch

久しぶりにトランプ元大統領の動静に関する記事を読みました。

大統領選に敗北して以来、表舞台からは姿を消したかのようですが、まだまだ気を吐く活動は健在のようです。

DALLAS – Former President Donald Trump spoke  at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Sunday, wide ranging remarks that included attacks on President Biden, former members of his administration and topics like critical race theory.

"With the help of everyone here today, we will defeat the radical left, the socialists, Marxists and the critical race theorists," Trump said. "We will secure our borders, we will stop left wing cancel culture, we will restore free speech and free elections and we will make America great again."

Trump added that "the people in this room have been some of the staunchest and fiercest supporters" of "the greatest political movement in the history of our country."

トランプ氏の矛先はバイデン政権にあることは明らかですが、特に国境問題に関してはその失政、無策ぶりをやり玉に挙げています。

また、"make America great again"を標榜するトランプ氏を支持する一定の層もまだまだ健在のようで、

"the people in this room have been some of the staunchest and fiercest supporters"

というくだりはトランプ氏自身の発言ながら、2024年に予定される大統領選候補として同氏を支持する党員が7割に上るという統計もそれを後押ししているかのようです。

さて、今日は"staunch"という単語を取り上げました。

この単語は形容詞です。水を通さない（watertight）という意味に始まり、信頼できる、誠実な、とか、揺るぎない、強固な、といった意味合いがあります。

ややこしいのですが、スペルが一字違いの単語に"stanch"というものがあります。こちらは動詞で、その意味は止血するというものです。その他、流れを止める、とか、（水の漏れ口など）を塞ぐ、という意味があります。

この"staunch"と"stanch"は現代においては、品詞からして異なる、別個の単語という扱いにはなっていますが、どちらも古フランス語estancher（現代フランス語ではetancher）に由来しており、元々は1つの単語だったと考えられています。
