未成年者の売春斡旋容疑などで訴追されたGhislaine Maxwell容疑者の公判が昨年末くらいから報道されているのを横目にみておりました。

主犯とされるJeffrey Epstein氏は獄中で謎の死を遂げ、謀殺説があがっていました。

英王室のアンドリュー王子は、斡旋された未成年女性と行為に及んだとかねてより報じられていましたが、英王室のスキャンダルとしては類を見ない状況です。

そのような中、アンドリュー王子のタイトルが剥奪されることになったと報道されています。

剥奪されるのは、英海軍における名誉職などの他、"His royal highness"（殿下）という称号も含まれるようです。

LONDON (AP) — Prince Andrew has been stripped of his honorary military roles as the growing furor over allegations that he sexually abused a teenage girl trafficked by the late financier Jeffrey Epstein threatened to taint the House of Windsor.

Buckingham Palace said late Thursday that Queen Elizabeth II had also agreed that Andrew, 61, will give up his honorary leadership of various charities, known as royal patronages.

He will also no longer use the title “his royal highness″ in official settings, British media said.

The decision is an effort to insulate the monarchy from the fallout from potentially years of sordid headlines as Andrew vows to fight a lawsuit filed by an American woman, Virginia Giuffre, who alleges she was forced to have sex with the prince when she was 17.

アンドリュー王子のスキャンダルは当初より大きく報じられていましたが、当時17歳だった米国人女性から訴訟を起こされ、英王室へのダメージも避けられないと判断されたのでしょう。

タイトル剥奪はエリザベス女王も承認しているとされ、

つまり、アンドリュー王子の公判が進む中で英王室の名誉に傷がつくことを懸念しているということです。

"insulate"という動詞が使われていますが、insulate 目的語 from〜、というパターンが見て取れると思います。

記事のコンテクストから言わんとするところは分かりますが、"insulate"がこのように使われるというのは知りませんでした。

辞書を引くと、絶縁する、断熱する、という意味がまず出てきます。

そもそも、insula（島）というラテン語から来ており、つまりは地続きではなく、（周りを水で囲まれて）隔絶している土地、という意味でした。

その後、絶縁体などを施すことにより電気や熱、音などを遮断する、という意味で用いられるようになります。

引用した記事のコンテクストのように、悪影響が及ばぬように守る、隔離する（to protect, to isolate）という意味でも用いられるというのは知りませんでした。

コーパスを検索してみるとこのような用法を多く確認することができました。
