パンデミックによるロックダウン期間中にイギリス政府関係者が飲酒を伴うパーティを催していたというスキャンダルは以前も関連記事を取り上げたところですが、また新たな事実が明らかになったと報じられています。

一体何度パーティを催したのかよくわかりませんが、今回は100人を超える招待客にお酒を自前で持ち込む案内をしたメールがすっぱ抜かれたようです。

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has more questions to answer after it emerged that one of his top officials sent an invitation to a Downing Street party to dozens of employees during the first Covid-19 lockdown in the country.

The email, from Johnson's principal private secretary Martin Reynolds, invited more than 100 staffers to "socially distanced drinks in the No. 10 garden" on May 20, 2020, encouraging them to "bring (their) own booze" and "make the most of the lovely weather."

この新たな暴露でジョンソン首相は議会で追求される羽目になりましたが、実際のところ姿を現さず、逃げている模様です。別の記事から引用します。

首相を庇って、代わりに説明責任を果たしているとされるのがMichael Ellis主計局長。表に出てこないジョンソン首相に代わって、議会で謝罪コメントを述べたそうです。

Ellis氏について、

bends down and takes the party rap

と記事タイトルで表現されています。

"take the rap"とは、誰かの責めを代わりに負う、という意味の慣用句です。

ジョンソン首相という人は、混乱を引き起こしていながら、自身では説明を回避し、他人にその責めを負わせているということで、記事本文中では、

generate chaos and let others take the rap

と揶揄されています。

"rap"には叩く、打つという意味がありますが、非難、咎め、という意味合いでも用いられます。
