"death doula"という言葉をご存知でしょうか？

私は初めて見ました。特に"doula"という単語は見たことが無かったのですが、手元の英和辞書にも載っておらず、意味を掴みあぐねたというところです。

それでは記事の引用をどうぞ。

比較的長い記事なのですが、前置きは省略し、"death doula"という言葉が出てくる箇所をピンポイントで引用しました。

上記引用箇所からお分かりのように、"death doula"については、死の淵にある人々、またはその近親者に寄り添う人を指すようです。

そして、"birth doula"という言葉も出てくるのですが、こちらは新しい生命が誕生する際に寄り添う人を指すようです、そうすると助産師さんのようなイメージでしょうか。

英和辞典には載っていない"doula"という単語ですが、American Heritage Dictionaryでは、

A woman who assists another woman during labor and provides support to her, the infant, and the family after childbirth.

と定義されており、やはり助産師という言葉が思い浮かびます。

しかし、助産師には"midwife"という単語がありますから、"doula"はまた別の概念だと考えるべきでしょう。Merriam-Websterでは、

a person trained to provide advice, information, emotional support, and physical comfort to a mother before, during, and just after childbirth

と定義されており、分娩時のみならず、出産前後においてもケアを提供する人を指すようです。

語源はギリシャ語で、奴隷、また給仕をする女性のことを指す言葉だそうです。

"death doula"という言葉は恐らく"birth doula"に倣って生まれたのだと思いますが、その背景には、パンデミックの時代、我々の死生観も大きな影響を受けているという状況があるようです。

記事を読んでいて、映画の「おくりびと」を思い出しました。アカデミー賞を始め、数多くの賞を受賞した2008年の日本映画話題作です。

納棺師である主人公が葬式に際して納棺を手掛ける故人らのそれぞれの生前が印象的でした。英語タイトルがもしや、と思ったのですが、"Departure"でした。
