新型コロナの感染者、死亡者数が世界一多いアメリカですが、マスクを着用しなくとも良いとする動きが出てきています。

今週初め、米国CDCによる航空機内などでのマスク着用義務化は違法との司法判断が下されました。

(CNN) — Air passengers in the US have been removing their Covid-19 face coverings after a federal judge ruled that the government's mask mandate on commercial planes was unlawful.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had previously insisted mask rules remain in place until May 3, but the judge in Florida struck down that directive on Monday.

率直な感想として、日本とは大違い、ではないでしょうか・・・。

ところで、この判例を歓迎できない、頭を痛めている人もいます。

マスク製造業者です。

そもそもアメリカではマスク着用の効果の程には懐疑的でしたが、感染対策としての効果が科学的にも証明されると着用が推奨され、マスクを着用する人々が増えたということがあります。

それを受けてアメリカ国内のマスク製造業者も生産を拡大してきたという背景があります。

ところが、今日に至って、マスク着用の強制は違法とする司法判断が出されてしまっては、メーカー側としては生産体制を見直さざるを得ません。

記事のタイトルで、

America's mask manufacturers take it on the chin

とありますが、"take it on the chin"というのは、苦難などに耐え忍ぶ、という意味の慣用句です。

ボクシングに因む表現だそうですが、顎（chin）に強烈なパンチを受けながらもそれを何とか凌いでいる、というイメージでしょうか。

手元にあるCollins Cobuild Dictionary of Idiomsでは、

If someone takes it on the chin, they bravely accept criticism or a difficult situation and do not make a fuss about it.

と解説されています。

打たれながらも黙って耐え忍ぶというということですが、コロナ禍ではみんな耐えてきました、よね？
