have an ax to grind

Thompson was shot several times by an unknown assailant Wednesday morning, who fled the scene on an electric CitiBike which it’s believed he rode north into Central Park on Center Drive.

New evidence has emerged suggesting the killer may have had an ax to grind with Thompson’s employer, cryptic words discovered written on the bullet casings pointing investigators to a 2010 book called “Delay, Deny, Defend,” which skewers the healthcare industry.
(Chris Nesi. Healthcare execs commonly face threats, says security expert — who wonders why UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was alone on NYC streets. New York Post. December 5, 2024.)

the killer may have had an ax to grind with Thompson’s employer

ここで、"have an ax to grind"というのは、英和辞典では、

personal ax to grind
political ax to grind
ideological ax to grind

touch grass

(Taylor Knight. Trendy Gen Z slang added to Merriam-Webster dictionary: From ‘FYP’ to ‘touch grass’ — here’s what they all mean. New York Post. October 2, 2024.)

touch grass

Merriam-Webster Dictionary

to participate in normal activities in the real world especially as opposed to online experiences and interactions

If you've been anywhere near social media lately, you might have seen the expression "go touch grass", meaning a person has spent too much time online and needs to get outside.

But according to Joanne Jones, a wellness expert from Trusted Psychics, the actual act of touching grass, also known as grounding, can be really beneficial if you experience low moods during the winter months as it is a natural way to boost your energy and state of mind.

"Grounding, also known as earthing, is a wellbeing practice that encourages you to reconnect with the Earth's natural energies by making physical contact with the ground," Joanne explains.

The wellness expert recommends walking barefoot or lying on the grass to connect with nature.
(Go touch grass: How grounding can help you fight the winter blues. Yahoo! News. November 7, 2024.)

As Democrats work to sort out last week's election results and determine why they lost Latino men in droves, a Latino Democrat and senator-elect has some advice for party leaders and top consultants: "Go touch grass and meet real Latinos."
(Kathryn Watson. Democrats are losing Latino men. Ruben Gallego has advice on winning them back. CBS News. November 12, 2024.)

She’s back to square one.

The Russian woman who snuck onto a Paris-bound Delta Airlines flight out of New York’s JFK International Airport last week will be flown back to the Big Apple Wednesday with a French escort — as the first images of the crafty stowaway emerged.

She’s expected to be handcuffed when she touches down.
(First pics of JFK stowaway revealed as Russian woman who snuck onto Paris flight heads back to NYC. New York Post. December 3, 2024.)

She’s back to square one.

soft-pedal

Author J. K. Rowling decried the "rewriting of history" soft-pedaling the extreme hostility she faced for her views on transgender ideology.

Last week, The New York Times published a piece on transgender activists rethinking their "all-or-nothing" approach and referenced the backlash against critics like Rowling as "unsparing criticism."

"When J.K. Rowling said that denying any relationship between sex and biology was ‘deeply misogynistic and regressive,’ a prominent LGBTQ group accused her of betraying ‘real feminism.’ A few angry critics posted videos of themselves burning her books," the article said.

On Monday, the "Harry Potter" author attacked this mild description of the backlash, reminding her X followers that she and others have received death threats and more.
(Lindsay Kornick. JK Rowling derides NY Times piece downplaying transgender backlash against her: 'Rewriting of history'. Fox News. December 2, 2024.)

NY Times piece downplaying transgender backlash against her

the "rewriting of history" soft-pedaling the extreme hostility she faced

They’re wining about Joe!

A New York City liquor store that recently opened just blocks away from the now-shuttered Trader Joe’s Wine Shop is cashing in on the intellectual property of the grocery chain and confusing customers, the retail behemoth claimed in a new lawsuit.

Trader Joe’s blasted Joe’s Wine Co. for not only sharing a similar name but copying the aesthetic of the beloved former wine store in Union Square, which closed two years ago after workers tried to unionize, according to court papers.
(Anna Young. Trader Joe’s in legal tiff with NYC wine shop over the name ‘Joe’. December 1, 2024.)

They’re wining about Joe!

whine
