know which side one’s bread is buttered on

know which side one’s bread is buttered on

The latest mass shooting at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas has once again elicited the “thoughts and prayers” from Congressional leaders in Washington, D.C. They are probably getting sick and tired of having to take time out of their busy schedules consolidating their power and financial gains to issue such boilerplate platitudes. After all, this was the 213th mass shooting in the first 144 days of 2022 in the USA (source: Gun Violence Archive).

The lobbyist loot that finds its way into their pockets via “campaign contributions” from firearms manufacturers and the National Rifle Association (NRA) compels them to avoid even attempting to pass legislation that might help alleviate this home-grown problem. They know which side their bread is buttered on and if it seems they value gun “rights” over human life, so be it. So far, luckily, it hasn’t been their children that have been slaughtered.
(Dexter K Oliver. Editorial: American as Apple Pie. Gila Herald. May 28, 2022.)

They know which side their bread is buttered on

If you know which side your bread is buttered, you understand fully how you are likely to benefit from a situation, and you know what to do or who to please in order to put yourself in the best possible situation.

no-brainer

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said on Sunday that raising the legal age for firearms purchases to 21 “is a no brainer” in the wake of the recent string of mass shootings in the U.S.

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Kinzinger told moderator Jonathan Karl that raising the age to purchase firearms would be a good start, noting the alleged shooters in the massacres in Uvalde, Texas, Buffalo, New York and Parkland, Florida were all under the age of 21.
(Olafimihan Oshin. Kinzinger says raising the age to purchase guns to 21 a ‘no-brainer’. The Hill. May 29, 2022.)

no-brainer

something that requires a minimum of thought

Elon Musk is trying to make it a no-brainer for you to move to Mars. Musk, the founder of SpaceX, shared his thinking on cost-effective space travel on Twitter over the weekend.
(Business Insider, 2019)

One of the most stunning elements of the first iPhone, which turns 10 years old today, is that it jettisoned the idea of a physical keyboard in favor of a software one. The idea, in hindsight, feels like a no-brainer. But during the iPhone's development more than a decade ago, the idea of an on-screen keyboard was a radical concept that ultimately had a colossal impact on the future of software interface and smartphone design.
(The Verge, 2017)

Scott's Seafood originally of San Francisco is also a no-brainer choice for high-end seafood and steaks, especially if you get a river-view patio table at sunset.
(San Francisco Chronicle, 2008)

But you've got to make security a key issue in every decision you make. "That starts with more effectively using the tools that you already own, avoiding shortcuts such as no-brainer passwords that leave you vulnerable, and surfing smarter and more skeptically.
(PC World, 2003)

"eulogizer in chief"

In the roughly 48 hours since yet another mass shooting, President Joe Biden has deliberately tried to stay out of the legislative and political scrum.

He’s refused to chastise Republicans explicitly for standing in the way of passing new gun laws and has given no outward indication of a type of bill he’d like to see pushed. Instead, he’s allowed Senate Democrats to set the tone of the public debate while he offers comfort to the families of victims and explores his options.

The approach has left some in the advocacy world nervous and wondering why the most powerful man in the country isn’t adequately using the bully pulpit on such an emotionally wrought issue.

“He can’t just be the ‘eulogizer in chief.’ He also needs to put the full force of his office into the legislative process. Otherwise it will seem like he’s lost hope.” said Peter Ambler, executive director for the gun safety group Giffords. “I think he can have an impact if he and the whole White House swing into action.”
(‘He can’t just be the ‘eulogizer in chief’’: Frustration grows over Biden’s Texas response. Politico. May 26, 2022.)

"eulogizer in chief"

"eulogizer in chief"の"in chief"は、"commander in chief"(最高司令官)や"editor in chief"(編集主幹)といった語に見られるように、役職名に使われる定型表現で、特に位の高い役職を指します。

People are being shot by an unknown sniper on the outskirts of Washington. A child is shot in a school yard just a few miles from the White House and our Idiot in Chief is worried about some nut thousands of miles away. It's so painfully obvious that our most pressing problems are right here at home. Is there any hope that this president will get over his unnatural obsession with Saddam Hussein and attend to the real problems we face as a country? Probably not.
(Atlanta Journal Constitution, 2002)

But, look, the president is out of his comfort zone. He doesn't like, as you mentioned, having to be a moral leader, the comforter in chief.
(CNN, 2018)

liar in chief
idiot in chief
narcissist in chief

proud as punch

Albanese often refers to his background as the son of a single mother to demonstrate his commitment to making life better for struggling Australians.

His mother, Maryanne, suffered rheumatoid arthritis and lived on disability benefits while she raised him alone in council housing in the 1960s.

"It gave me a determination each and every day to help the people like I was growing up to have a better life. And I think that's what Australians want," he told the National Press Club in January.

Albanese repeatedly credited his mother for her strength during his campaign, most recently on Friday when he paid tribute to a "incredible woman."

"She'd be proud as punch because she made the courageous decision in 1963 to keep a child that she had out of wedlock," he said.
(Hilary Whiteman. Australian voters deliver strong message on climate, ending conservative government's 9-year rule. CNN. May 21, 2022.)

She'd be proud as punch

pleased as Punch

Punch and Judy showをネットで検索してみると、動画で見ることができます。

put one’s money where one’s mouth is

put one’s money where one’s mouth is

American Heritage Dictionary

To live up to one's words; act according to one's own advice.

Throughout the pandemic, many workers have said they'd quit if employers forced them back to the office. In March, Robert Half, a global recruiting firm, released a survey that revealed 50% of US workers would rather resign than be forced back to the office full-time.

But in early May, one high-profile worker put his money where his mouth is: Apple's director of machine learning, Ian Goodfellow, resigned over the Silicon Valley giant’s return-to-office policy. The company had started bringing back workers one day per week starting 11 April, then two days 2 May, with a ramp-up to three required days starting 23 May. The high-ranking Goodfellow wasn’t on board with the plan – so he walked. (Apple has not responded to BBC Worklife's request for comment; it also has yet to comment publicly on the reports of Goodfellow's resignation.)
(Bryan Lufkin. The workers quitting over return-to-office policies. BBC News. May 24, 2022.)
