no-brainer

今日取り上げたいと思っているのは、"no-brainer"という表現です。以前から気になっていたのですが、今朝読んだ記事で使われていたのでちょうど良いタイミングでした。

Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said on Sunday that raising the legal age for firearms purchases to 21 “is a no brainer” in the wake of the recent string of mass shootings in the U.S. 

During an appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Kinzinger told moderator Jonathan Karl that raising the age to purchase firearms would be a good start, noting the alleged shooters in the massacres in Uvalde, Texas, Buffalo, New York and Parkland, Florida were all under the age of 21.

先週起きたテキサス州での銃乱射事件を受けて、銃規制に関する議論が高まってきています。

容疑者の18歳男性が「合法的に」ライフル銃を入手したとあって、果たして18歳に銃の所持を認めるというのは適正なのか、という議論になっているようです。

共和党議員は、銃規制の年齢を21歳に引き上げることは、

no-brainer

であると発言し、これが取り上げられています。

"no-brainer"は手元の研究社大英和には載っていませんでしたが、Merriam-Websterによりますと、

something that requires a minimum of thought

と定義されています。

考えることをほとんど必要としない事柄、と訳せますが、簡単なこと、という意味なのかな、と思いました。つまり、銃器購入の年齢制限を18歳から21歳に引き上げるのは簡単なことだ、またすぐにでも実行できることだ、と言いたいのだろうと思いました。

"no-brainer"という単語の初出は1950年代だそうです。

"no-brainer"の"brain"とは恐らく言うまでもなく脳（アタマ）のことでしょう。接尾辞-erがついているからには、また、no〜、というからには、"brain"を「アタマを使う」というような動詞として捉えているからでしょうが、"brain"にそのような動詞の意味はありません。

語源がよく分からない故に、"no-brainer"の含意するところもぼんやりしているように思われます。

いくつか用例を拾ってみました。

Elon Musk is trying to make it a no-brainer for you to move to Mars. Musk, the founder of SpaceX, shared his thinking on cost-effective space travel on Twitter over the weekend.

ここでの"no-brainer"が言わんとするところは、大事ではない簡単なこと、できて当たり前のようなレベルのもの、といった意味合いがあるように思われます。

One of the most stunning elements of the first iPhone, which turns 10 years old today, is that it jettisoned the idea of a physical keyboard in favor of a software one. The idea, in hindsight, feels like a no-brainer. But during the iPhone's development more than a decade ago, the idea of an on-screen keyboard was a radical concept that ultimately had a colossal impact on the future of software interface and smartphone design.

この例においても、当たり前、言わずもがな、という感じが強くします。（実のところ、"no-brainer"が使われる文脈に"hindsight"（振り返ってみれば、後知恵では）という言葉が出てくる例がちらほら見られます。）

こちらは、文字通り、「アタマを使わなくとも」、悩まずとも思い付くような、特に苦心の必要も無い、というようなニュアンスです。

But you've got to make security a key issue in every decision you make. "That starts with more effectively using the tools that you already own, avoiding shortcuts such as no-brainer passwords that leave you vulnerable, and surfing smarter and more skeptically.

"no-brainer" passwordというのは、やはり何にも考えていない、セキュリティ意識のかけらも無いような単純なパスワードのことを言うのでしょう。

こうして見てみますと"no-brainer"の意味するところ、そのニュアンスはコンテクストによって微妙に違ってくるようです。

冒頭取り上げた議員の発言に戻りますと、規制年齢を引き上げることは"no-brainer"だ、と発言したそのニュアンスには、規制年齢引き上げが簡単である、すぐにでも実行できる、という実際的なステートメントであると解釈はできます。深読みすれば、それが誰でも思い付くようなレベルの対策であるけれども、（悲劇を防ぐという意味での）実効性があるかは疑問だ、というニュアンスを含んでいるのかも知れません。
