ここで使われている"up to scratch"とは、一定の水準に達している、という意味なのですが、主に否定のコンテクストで用いられることが多く、つまり"not up to scratch"で水準に達していない、期待に沿わないという意味合いで用いられます。

記事では、一定の水準に達していないZ世代の社員を解雇する動きが拡がっていると言っています。

"up to scratch"の"scratch"にはスタートラインの意味があるようです。また、ボクシングのリングのマット中央に引かれたラインのことでもあるらしく、要はこのラインに立って殴り合いの試合を始めるレベルに至っているかどうか、ということだそうです。（Merriam-Webster Dictionary オンラインの解説にあります。）

似た表現に、

from the scratch

というものがありますが、こちらは皆さんもご存知なのではないかと思います。

一から（やり直し、再スタート）、はじめから、という意味ですね。

exonerate

アメリカ国内ニュースで、殺人罪被告の死刑執行の是非を問う報道を目にしました。

Marcellus Williams被告は1998年にミズーリ州で発生した女性殺害の容疑で逮捕、訴追され、その後死刑判決を受けましたが、確定的証拠も無く、死刑執行が見送られてきたという経緯がありました。遺族からも死刑執行の停止を求める嘆願が提出されていたにも関わらず、9月24日火曜日、死刑が執行されました。

The state of Missouri executed Marcellus Williams on Tuesday evening by lethal injection, over the objections of the local prosecutor whose office obtained Mr. Williams’s murder conviction in 2003.

Mr. Williams, who for decades maintained his innocence, had in recent days sought clemency from the governor and a stay of execution from the State Supreme Court. But on Monday, both the governor, Mike Parson, and the State Supreme Court turned him down, and on Tuesday the U.S. Supreme Court, his last hope, declined to intervene.

He was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. at a state prison in Bonne Terre, the Missouri Department of Corrections said in a statement.

偶然と言うべきか、時期を同じくして、日本では1966年に発生した一家4人の殺害事件の被告として死刑判決を受けた袴田巌さんの再審で無罪が確定したというニュースが海外でも大きく報道されています。

Now, more than five decades later, the world’s longest-serving death row prisoner has had his name cleared, according to public broadcaster NHK.

A Japanese court on Thursday acquitted 88-year-old Hakamata, who was wrongfully sentenced to death in 1968 for murdering a family, marking the end of a marathon legal saga that’s brought global scrutiny to Japan’s criminal justice system and fueled calls to abolish the death penalty in the country.

取り上げた2つの記事のタイトルに共通する1語は、

exonerate

です。

疑いを晴らす、無罪を証明するという意味の動詞ですが、重荷、苦労、負担という意味のラテン語onusと、接頭辞ex-からなる単語です。

罪を晴らす（exonerate）ことが出来なかった米国の死刑囚と、45年間を死刑囚として過ごした果てに無罪を勝ち取った（exonerate）日本の袴田さん。

司法という制度の厳格さと理不尽さを感じます。

smithereens

今日の1語、"smithereens"はちょっと変わったスペルですが、粉微塵、という意味の名詞です。

末尾の-sは複数形という訳ではなく、スペルの一部です。つまり"smithereen"という単数形がある訳ではありません。辞書には複数形扱いの名詞ということになっていますが、用例としては、

blow something to smithereens

smash something to smithereens

のいずれかになることがほとんどで、木っ端微塵にする、という意味合いで使われます。

Former President Trump said Wednesday that he’d threaten to blow Iran “to smithereens” if he was back in the White House and a candidate faced threats from Tehran, comments that come after his campaign said he was briefed about Iran’s alleged assassination threats against him.

引用記事は2度の暗殺未遂にあったトランプ元大統領がイランに対して放った過激な発言を引用したものです。

トランプ氏の暗殺の背景にイランが関与しているのではないかとの分析がありますが、トランプ氏は自分が大統領になったらイランを粉砕するぞ、と威嚇したようです。

"smithereens"という単語の語源はアイルランド語で破片を意味するsmiodarに由来するそうです。

gloom and doom

記事の引用からどうぞ。

ちょっと分かりにくいかもしれませんが、英議会の話です。

何かと落ち着かない、イギリス国内の経済、政治の状況のようですが、スターマー首相（労働党首）の舵取りが注目されているコンテクストです。

"gloom and doom"というのが今日取り上げる表現なのですが、

暗い将来予想、暗いニュース、暗い景気見通し、不況予想

（ランダムハウス英和辞書）

というのがその意味です。

"gloom"は暗がり、憂鬱、"doom"は破滅、悲運という意味ですが、どちらも同じような意味で韻を踏んでいます。

故に単語としての親和性があって結びつきやすいのだと思われますが、冗語表現とも考えられます。

引用した記事では"gloom and doom"ですが、逆の語順で"doom and gloom"として辞書に載せているものもあります。（American Heritage Dictionary）

引用例では続いて、"zoom and vroom"という、これまた倣ったような表現が出てきますが、こちらは"gloom and doom"に対して、明るい兆しや見通しのことを言っているものと思われますが、確立している表現ではなさそうです。

gumption

先日、トランプ元大統領を暗殺する目的で、ゴルフ場にライフル銃を持って潜伏していた男が現場で逮捕されました。元大統領を狙った暗殺未遂事件としては2度目となるところ、メディアの取り上げ方はどこか低調なものがあります。

今日読んだ記事では暗殺未遂の容疑者が残していた手紙が取り上げられています。その内容というのが自ら暗殺の意図を明確に記したもので、重大な証拠となるものと思われます。

The man who authorities say sat with a rifle in the trees where Donald Trump was golfing earlier this month in West Palm Beach, Florida, previously wrote a letter stating “this was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump,” according to a new filing Monday by federal prosecutors.

One letter, addressed to “The World” said: “This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job.”

その手紙の中で使われている、

gumption

という見慣れない単語が引っかかりました。

殺人未遂容疑者の手紙に出てくる英単語を取り上げるのもどうかと思いましたが、

勇気、度胸、根性、積極性

という意味だそうです。

辞書にはスコットランド語に由来すると考えられるとの説明が見えますが、詳しいことは分からないらしく、語源不詳とあります。

Merriam-Webster Dictionaryによると、元々スコットランド語では「常識」というほどの意味だったようですが、勇気といった意味合いが生じたのはアメリカ英語に入ってからのようです。
