fair game

勤務先のオフィススペースには社員が使う冷蔵庫がありますが、その日のランチを朝買ってきて冷蔵庫に置いておいたり、お土産のお菓子を保存したり、はたまた牛乳パックがあるかと思えば、納豆のパックがあったり、色々な人が好き勝手に使っています。私は個人的にオフィスの冷蔵庫をほとんど使用していないのですが、漏れ聞くところでは賞味期限切れの食べ物が放置してあったり、自分のものが無くなったり、とトラブルも少なからずあるようです。

こうした事情はどこのオフィスでも、洋の東西を問わずあるのでしょう。以下、ニューヨークポスト紙からの記事の引用です。

盗んだ犯人がいるわけで、その人が悪いのは百も承知ですが。以下は盗む側の言い分です。


“If it’s after 5 p.m. and the person has gone home, it’s fair game,” says the food thief, who asked his last name not be used so his eating habits could go undisturbed. He defends his habit by pointing out that day-old food is gross, and says that he leaves things that don’t perish as quickly — such as soda, yogurt and apples — alone.

こういう盗みを仕出かすというのは、ある種、性癖みたいなものが大きく関係しているようです。

腐りそうな食べ物を見ると勿体なくてつい・・・、というところでしょうか。

ところで、"fair game"というのは、格好のターゲット、「カモ」ということです。17時以降は狙い目 ー つまり犯行時間帯となります。

被害を避けるには、自衛することに尽きるでしょうか。
