渋谷でのハロウィーン狂騒は先週末で一区切りしたようですが、毎年のように相も変わらず若者や外国人がどんちゃん騒ぎを繰り広げ、翌朝に残るのはゴミの山という報道に呆れます。

十数年前にアメリカに短期滞在した際、現地のハロウィーンに触れる機会がありましたが、郊外の住宅地に住む同僚に招かれてのハロウィーンディナーはそれは静かなものだったことを思い出します。子供たちがお菓子をもらいに近所をねり歩くというのはありますが、日本のそれが商業イベントと化しているのと比べると雰囲気はかなり違います。

そうは言っても年に一度のイベントは羽目を外したくなるものなのでしょう。

以下に引用する記事は、とてもお高くついてしまった仮装の代償の話です。


An Alabama woman’s $3 finishing touch to her zombie Halloween costume landed her a terrifying trip to the dentist after her fake vampire fangs wouldn’t detach from her actual chompers. Anna Tew, of Mobile County, claims she used the temporary glue that came with the store-purchased fake teeth.

She said her efforts to remove the teeth, which had grown uncomfortably tight in her mouth, went on until around 2 a.m.

吸血鬼よろしく、仮装用の牙をつけたところが外れなくなってしまい、病院に駆け込んだという話です。

牙は"fang"というのは分かりましたが、初めて見たのが"chompers"という単語なんですが、これは歯を意味するそうです。

不思議なことにこの"chomper(s)"という単語をいくつかの辞書を当たってみたのですが載っていません。

"chomper(s)"が"chomp"という動詞から来ているのは明らかですが、"chomp"（もしくは、champ）は「むしゃむしゃ」、あるいは「がりがり」と食べるという意味があります。

俗語の類という訳でもなさそうなのですが、単に「歯」（teeth）というところを少しユーモラスに表現する場合に使われるのだろうと想像します。


How many viewers are exercising along with them, one wonders, and how many are just happily enjoying the show with a nice yummy snack in their laps? The only muscles that get a workout are the eyeballs and the chompers. And maybe the finger on the remote control.
