クラクション ー honk

道路でのいざこざは洋の東西を問わずというところでしょうか。

クラクションを鳴らすことでトラブルになったというニュースは然程珍しいものでもありませんが。


A man was stabbed in an apparent road-rage attack after honking his horn at a stopped car in Brooklyn on Thursday night, police said.

The 53-year-old man was driving his blue Volvo on 65th Street near West 5th Street in Bensonhurst at about 5:30 p.m. when he honked at a red Infiniti that was stopped near the intersection, authorities said.

The driver of the Infinity and a passenger then got out of the car and began yelling at the Volvo driver, police said.

They then forced him out of his car, punched him and stabbed him, cops said. They both got back into the Infinity after the attack and sped away, authorities said.

日本語で当たり前のように「クラクション」という言葉を使いますが、英語では、


honk


という動詞を使うのが一般的です。あるいは、”(toot the) horn”でしょうか。

“honk”は擬声語です。つまり、あのけたたましい音を字にした単語です。

ところで「クラクション」はカタカナなんですが、これが商標名から来ているということをご存知でしたか？

「クラクション」のスペルは、

なのですが、あのけたたましい音を発する機会を発明したのはアメリカ人で19世紀の初めころだったそうです。

その機会を、”klaxon”と名付けたそうですが、名付け親のアメリカ人にギリシャ語の素養があったのでしょうか、ギリシャ語で金切り声をあげるという意味の動詞klazeinから作ったと言われています。

では、この”klaxon”がいわゆる「クラクションを鳴らす」の意味で使われているかというと、辞書のエントリにはあるものの、コーパスを当たってみましたが自動車のクラクションとしての用法はほとんど見当たりませんでした。
