こんな意味もあったの？ ― bleed

当事者でなくて良かった、と思う人がほとんどではないかと思います。

ニューアーク発、香港行きのユナイテッド航空機に14時間もの長時間に渡って閉じ込められた乗客は凍えるような寒さの中、十分な食料もなく一夜を明かしたそうです。


Passengers aboard a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Hong Kong were left stuck on the ground for more than 14 hours in frigid weather with a dwindling supply of food.

The nightmarish incident began when the 3:05 p.m. flight was diverted to the Goose Bay Airport in Newfoundland, Canada, due to a medical emergency. The plane landed there at 9:31 p.m. AST, and medical personnel met the aircraft and a passenger was taken to a local hospital.

But as the flight was set to take off again, it experienced a mechanical issue.

機内の急病人対応のため、カナダの寒冷地に緊急着陸したようですが、対応も終わりさて離陸というところで機体がトラブルに見舞われてしまい、離陸できなくなったようです。

記事のくだりは以下のように続きます。


Passengers were not allowed to leave the airplane because the Goose Bay Airport did not have a customs officer on duty during the overnight hours. Saturday bled into Sunday, and still the flight remained grounded.

緊急着陸が夜中だったためか、空港に税関職員がおらず、機内に留まらざるを得なかったようです。上記のくだりで、

という部分の動詞"bled (bleed)"に興味を覚えました。

ご存知のように"bleed"は出血するという意味ですが、ここでは土曜深夜から翌日曜日に日付が変わっていったことについて、"bled into"という表現をしています。

動詞"bleed"にそのような意味があったのかと辞書を引いた次第です。

ところが手元の辞書にはそれらしき訳語は載っておらず、果たして確立されている用法なのかという疑問が出てきました。コーパスを当たってみます。

こういう時にコーパスは便利なのですが、検索してみると、意外にも「出血する」以外の意味合いで"bleed"を使っている用法がちらほらと見当たります。いくつか挙げてみました。


The dramatic rainfall the area received in 2009 led to a shortage in pumpkins. A shortage one year can bleed into the next because there are no pumpkins warehoused until the next crop can be harvested and processed.

to spread into or through something gradually : seep


という定義が載っており、後者の4つについてはこの定義がよく当てはまると思われます。

時間の移り変わりや、問題点等の拡散、物事の境界線があいまいになってくる、といったことなどを、血液などの液体が流れて滲みていく様子を比喩的に捉えて拡張した表現だと言えます。ある意味文学的かもしれません。
